Embark vs Wisdom Panel

Two dog DNA kits, judged as gifts rather than as science projects. What each one reports on its own listing, which suits a rescue owner, and which to actually put under the tree.

A dog DNA kit is the rare gift that answers a question the owner asks out loud constantly. “What ishe?” is said in every dog park in America, and for the price of a decent dinner you can hand someone the answer. It is also the best gift we know for the dog owner who already owns everything, because the thing being given is information rather than another object for the shelf.

Two brands own the category — Embark and Wisdom Panel — and both sell several kits at several prices, which is where gift buyers get lost. Below is the short version, then the detail. Every figure quoted here is the number each brand states on its own live Amazon listing, read on October 11, 2026. We have not run either kit, and both companies claim to be the most accurate on the market, so we do not adjudicate that contest; what we can do is tell you which box makes the better present.

Buy Wisdom Panel Breed Discovery for most gifts. It is the cheapest way to the reveal, its listing claims 430+ breeds with a report down to 1%, it traces the family tree back three generations, and it still includes the MDR1 medication-sensitivity test. For a gift where the point is the fun, this is enough.

Buy Embark Breed ID for a rescue with no history. It reports 400+ breeds on a platform Embark says was developed with Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, plus ancestry back to great-grandparents and a relative finder — the listing says over 90% of tested dogs have a close relative in the database and 12% find a direct family member. For someone whose dog arrived with no paperwork, that is the emotional part of the gift.

Buy a health kit only for an owner who will use it. Embark Breed & Health screens 270+ genetic health risks per its listing and adds 55 traits and allergy risk scores; Wisdom Panel Premium covers a similar scope with 51 traits and 25+ behavior insights. Both are a real service to an engaged owner and a source of worry for an anxious one.

One practical warning before the picks: both Embark listings say results generally take two to four weeks after the swab goes back in the post. The box is the gift on the day; the payoff arrives next month. If you want a reaction in the room, pair it with something small they can open at the same time — our gifts under $25 list is built for exactly that job.

Prices move on these kits more than on anything else we cover, so they are pulled live rather than typed in by us. For the long-form take on the kit we have written up in full, see our Wisdom Panel DNA test review.

What each brand actually puts in the box

Both companies sell a cheek swab, a prepaid return mailer and an online account where the results appear. The difference is what the account is allowed to tell you, and that is set by which kit you bought.

Wisdom Panel Breed Discovery is the entry point and the one we recommend as a gift. Its listing claims 430+ breeds, a breed report down to 1%, a family tree going back three generations, relative matching, three behavioral insights and the MDR1 medication-sensitivity test. That last inclusion is the reason it punches above its price: the cheapest kit here still carries the one health result most likely to matter at a vet appointment.

Embark Breed IDcosts a little more and spends the difference on ancestry rather than health. It reports 400+ breeds, including village dogs, which is Embark’s stated answer for mixes that confuse a breed-only database. It adds the relative finder, which is the feature people actually post about — finding a cousin, occasionally a sibling. Health insights are not included, but the listing states they can be unlocked in the app later, so the recipient can upgrade on their own terms.

Embark Breed & Healthis the same breed report with the medical half switched on: 270+ genetic health risks per the listing, including MDR1, degenerative myelopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy and progressive retinal atrophy; 55 physical traits such as predicted adult size, coat type and shedding; and allergy risk scores across environmental, food, contact and flea allergies. The listing is careful to say the allergy score shows genetic predisposition rather than an active allergy — a distinction worth repeating to whoever opens it.

Wisdom Panel Premium is the completist option: 430+ breeds, 51 traits, 25+ behavior insights, and the widest health panel here — the listing now states 270+ health tests in both its title and its bullets, having previously given 265+ in one place and 270+ in the other. Counts on these listings do get revised, so if the exact number matters to you, read the detail page on the day you buy.

The accuracy argument, and why we stay out of it

Embark’s listing calls itself the most accurate dog DNA test available and cites a research partnership with Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine along with over 99% genotyping accuracy. Wisdom Panel’s listing calls itself the most accurate breed detection and cites the world’s largest breed database with more than five million pets tested in 50+ countries.

Both of those can be true at once, because they are measuring different things — genotyping accuracy is not the same claim as breed-database breadth — and neither can be verified by a gift guide. We have not run a dog through both kits, so we will not tell you which is more accurate. Anyone who does tell you that, without their own paired test, is repeating marketing copy.

What a gift buyer can act on is simpler. Wisdom Panel lists more breeds (430+ vs 400+) and a finer breakdown (down to 1%). Embark lists the better ancestry and relative-matching story and the ability to add health later. Pick on which of those two things the person would actually enjoy, and you cannot really go wrong.

Giving a health report: the one judgment call

This is the part of the decision that is about the person rather than the product. A health panel on a dog is useful information — Embark’s listing says three in four tested dogs turn up some genetic risk — and for an owner who takes that to their vet and plans around it, the extra outlay is the most worthwhile money on this page.

For a different kind of owner, it is a stack of things to be frightened of, delivered by you, in a gift box, at Christmas. Genetic risk is not diagnosis; plenty of dogs carrying a marker never develop the condition. But that nuance is hard to hold onto at 11pm with a results page open, and you cannot un-give it.

So: health kit for the practical, engaged, vet-call-making owner. Breed kit for everyone else, with the knowledge that Embark allows health to be added in the app later if they want it. And if the dog is elderly or already unwell, consider skipping the category entirely — our senior dog gifts guide is a kinder place to shop, and our gifts for someone whose dog is sick guide is written for the hardest version of that.

Who this gift is wrong for

A purebred dog with papers. The breed report tells them what they already know. The health and traits reports still have something to offer, but the fun part is gone, and the fun part is why this gift works.

A household with several dogs. One kit is one dog. Handing over a single swab for a house with three dogs makes the recipient choose, which is not a gift. Buy one per dog or pick something else.

Someone who does not want their dog’s data stored. These services keep the genetic results in an account and match relatives across their database, which is the feature and, for some people, the objection. If the person is privacy-minded, this is a thoughtful gift that will land badly.

A gift that has to be opened and loved on the day. Two to four weeks of waiting is part of the deal. If the occasion is a birthday party where the gift gets opened in front of people, give something physical and keep the kit for a quieter moment — or look at our personalized dog pillows and custom dog portraits guides for gifts that land in the room.

Before you order: four things to check

Check the price on the day. DNA kits are the most heavily discounted thing we cover, and the gap between a sale price and list price here is larger than most of the gifts on this site cost. Our Black Friday deals guide tracks what we have actually seen discount in this category.

Check which kit the listing is for. Both brands sell several kits under near-identical names, and the breed-only and breed-plus-health versions sit side by side. Read the title, not the brand.

Check the dog is old enough to swab, and the owner is up for it. A cheek swab is quick but it is still a thing someone has to do to their dog and then post back. For a person who will never get round to it, this is a gift that sits in a drawer.

Check whether the breed answer is the gift, or their own dog is. If the real feeling is about this one dog rather than its ancestry, a keepsake beats a report — our DNA test vs custom portrait comparison is the next page to read, and our golden retriever gifts guide is the one to use when the breed is already known and celebrated.

Embark vs Wisdom Panel: common questions

Embark or Wisdom Panel — which is the better gift?

For a gift, Wisdom Panel's Breed Discovery kit is usually the right call: it is the cheapest route to the thing that makes this gift fun, and its listing claims the largest breed database of the two at 430+ breeds with a report down to 1%. Buy Embark instead when the dog is a rescue with an unknown past — Embark's Breed ID kit adds ancestry back to great-grandparents and a relative finder, and its listing says over 90% of tested dogs find a close relative. Both brands claim to be the most accurate; we cannot referee that, and neither should any gift guide.

Should I give the health version?

Only if you are confident the person wants it. The Embark Breed & Health kit screens for 270+ genetic health risks per its listing, and Wisdom Panel Premium reports a similar scope. For an engaged owner who talks to their vet, that is genuinely valuable and the better buy. For an anxious owner, a list of genetic risks is a worry delivered in a gift box. When in doubt, give the breed kit: Embark's listing notes health insights can be unlocked in the app later, so they can choose to go further themselves.

How long do dog DNA results take?

Both Embark listings say results generally land in two to four weeks after the swab is mailed back. That is worth knowing when you are wrapping it: the gift is the box on the day, and the actual payoff arrives a month later. Some people love that — it is a gift that keeps showing up — but if you want the reaction in the room, pair the kit with something they can open and use immediately.

What is MDR1 and why do the listings keep mentioning it?

MDR1 is a genetic variant that makes some dogs sensitive to a number of commonly used medications. It is the one health result that both brands put front and center, and it is included even in Wisdom Panel's cheaper Breed Discovery kit. We are not vets and this page is not medical advice — the practical point for a gift buyer is that it is the single result most likely to change a vet conversation, which is why even the breed-focused kits carry it.

Is a DNA kit a good gift for a puppy?

It is one of the best, because the results are actionable while the dog is still growing. Embark's Breed & Health listing highlights 55 physical traits including predicted adult size, coat type and shedding level, which is exactly the information a new owner is guessing at when they buy a crate, pick a food or book a groomer. For other new-puppy gift ideas, our new puppy gifts guide covers the practical ones.

Can one kit be used for two dogs?

No — each kit is one swab for one dog, which catches people out in multi-dog households. If they have two dogs, one kit means choosing a favorite, and that is a strange position to put someone in. Buy two, or buy a different gift. Wisdom Panel does sell a two-pack of its Premium kit if you want both covered on one order.
